Ask Principal Donna is Launched

Hi all,

This is an exciting day! Ask Principal Donna is officially launched. I hope you find a wealth of knowledge on education–opinions and research–that can encourage discussion. Education is an enigma that presents huge challenges to educators and legislators as they endeavor to meet the needs of all students. Whether you choose to be part of the independent or public school systems, there will be something for you on this site.

My eclectic background in education gives me a broad perspective. My current work to complete my dissertation steeps me in the latest research on educational practices and theories. Years of experience in private, charter and public schools informs my understanding of each venue.

Since my passion has long been meeting the needs of all students, I have steeped myself in Waldorf education, as well as Core Knowledge and standards-based education for over 20 years. I am primarily concerned with the role of education and its ability to nurture the whole child. Work with students with special needs, including Gifted and Special Education, have provided years of insight that will inform the advice I can provide to you. Ask away! I’m here to serve!

When my oldest daughter attended the Charter school where you were principal, her 5th grade teacher and I both felt that she was having an inordinate amount of difficulty in learning. We had a meeting with you and her teachers and you told us our daughter “had no problems. She is getting excellent grades”. You refused to investigate further and we were offered no support. When my daughter was a Sophomore in high school we had private testing done. She was diagnosed with Fine motor skill problems that essentially mean she cannot learn when she is writing notes, and she had visual processing/focusing issues which made it VERY difficult for her to read. She has also been diagnosed with ADHD. She did so well in her grades because of her giftedness and the amount of work she put in! I am so glad you opened this forum so that I could take the opportunity to let you know how seriously wrong you were and how negatively you impacted my child. Your arrogance cost us our chance to get her help early on. I have regretted listening to you for 7 years and would advise other parents looking for help for their children to go elsewhere!
